Growing Local: Native Plants of LA
PrintResearchGame Design 2025
Created in collaboration with Nahla Quazi, Olivia Losquadro, and Maya Janaswamy, this project hopes to encourage the cultivation of plants native to the Los Angeles area following the devastation of the Palisades and Eaton wildfires, offering advice on how to care for them and how to more meaningfully integrate gardening into our daily lives. Our accompanying game connects the meditative qualities of gardening with memory and grief.
To accomplish these goals, we worked closely with Dr. Anthony Baniaga at the Mathias Botanical Garden to establish three distinct plant categorizations: medicinal, ground cover, and pollinator-friendly, and within each category, three significant and accessible plants. For each plant, we detailed their sunlight and watering needs, plant type, flowering seasons, and characteristics. To accompany this information, we decided on 4 local resources beneficial to new and experienced gardeners. Lastly, to motivate readers to begin their gardening journeys, I designed, cut, and inserted seed pouches filled with California Poppy Seeds, alongside more thorough care instructions.
